Towards a sustainable bioeconomy

Prof. Jochen Büchs | RWTH Aachen | Biochemical Engineering

Research topics and profile (related to bioeconomy)

The Chair of Biochemical Engineering develops innovative methods and techniques to analyze and establish efficient biochemical processes. These methods and techniques are developed in cooperation with industry and other academic institutes (engineering, biology, chemistry, etc.).

The main research areas are: (1) screening technologies, (2) small scale cultivation systems, and (3) fermentation technology.

Contributions to BioSC

The Chair of Biochemical Engineering can provide innovative screening methods and techniques to analyze biotechnological processes. Moreover, an in-depth knowledge about the biocatalytic conversion of renewable feedstock has been established.

FS 3: „Chemical engineering and processing“

  • Integration of biocatalytic process steps (e.g. hydrolysis and fermentation)
  • Realization of fed-batch or continuous processes at small scale and large scale
  • Modeling of biocatalytic processes

FS 2: “Microbial and molecular transformation“

  • High-throughput-screening of biocatalytic processes
  • Online measurement of biocatalytic processes
  • Microbial conversion of (ligno-)cellulose to valuable products
