Towards a sustainable bioeconomy

Research topics and profile (related to bioeconomy)

Our research perspective is to apply synthetic biology approaches to develop novel tools and techniques to i) monitor, control and understand eukaryotic regulatory networks and metabolic processes in a quantitative and spatiotemporally resolved manner, and to ii) generate biotechnological and biomedical applications. To this aim we follow a synergistic approach at the interface of engineering and life sciences, focusing on synthetic signalling systems and metabolic pathways, biological sensors, and chemical and optical switches
(optogenetics).

Contributions to BioSC

Synthetic biology is a very young, dynamic and innovative field of research with high relevance for both basic and applied sciences. The Institute of Synthetic Biology at the HHU, follows an interdisciplinary theoretical-experimental strategy bridging mammalian and plant systems to yield in novel technologies for translational research. These includes optogenetics, plant and mammalian synthetic biology, high end-cloning approaches, biomedical applications and the engineering of plant signalling, metabolism and environmental stress protection. The interdisciplinary nature of the research performed helps establishing productive synergies between the different groups represented in the BioSC, in particular in the systems engineering and microbial and molecular conversions areas.
