„Woche der Umwelt“ 2021 – We are involved!

Under the motto " This is how the future works!", Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (German Federal Foundation for the Environment) are inviting visitors to the Week of the Environment on June 10 and 11. The BioSC is among the 150 WdU-certified exhibitors as a partner of IBG-2 Plant Sciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich and the initiative BioökonomieREVIER, presenting a contribution on the sustainable management of lignite phase-out.

Due to the Corona pandemic, the sixth WdU edition will take place partly in presence and partly in online forums in a hybrid format. The exhibitors, awarded with a WdU certificate, choose the digital variant and invite visitors on special websites with image, text and sound material to browse and search for traces of paths to a sustainable future.

The certificate has a special meaning: because the exhibitors - including companies, research institutes, clubs and associations - have been specially chosen by a jury of experts appointed by the Federal President for the WdU to show their commitment to environmental protection - and all the aspects that are related to it: from climate, energy and resources to soil and biodiversity to construction, housing and mobility.

The projects presented in the exhibition include, for example, the development of the world's first highly insulating thermal glass, a concept for the construction of high-rise buildings made of wood, and the development of environmentally friendly packaging in which styropor is replaced by straw. The contribution "BioökonomieREVIER - Dialog and research for a sustainable design of the lignite phase-out" describes how bioeconomic value creation concepts can support the structural change necessitated by the coal phase-out.

Just as the exhibitors invite visitors on a voyage of discovery into the world of planetary protection, the Week of the Environment itself whets people's appetites for protecting the Earth: After the opening by the Federal President on Thursday, June 10, a two-day program will start on a main stage in the park of Bellevue Palace as well as in digital expert forums. Both the discourses on the main stage and the expert forums will be streamed live. The topics range from efficient heat use and a comprehensive circular economy, climate neutrality and energy transition to sustainable capital investments and mobility.
