Systems Engineering

The cross-cutting topic Systems Engineering focuses on diverse bio(techno)logical systems and the fields of application of the Bioeconomy Science Centers. The objective is to represent the complex biological and technical interaction networks in terms of mathematical models (modeling), develop and apply computer-assisted methods for generating quantitative data (simulation), and validate models (estimation of parameters, experimental design) as well as utilize model-assisted methods for the development and optimization of products and processes for a bioeconomy.

Bioinformatics and knowledge management

Within the Bioeconomy Science Centre the cross-cutting topic "Bioinformatics and Knowledge Management" will address relevant questions from the scope of data and knowledge management, of modelling and data analysis with a broad spectrum of technologies and methods. The central bioinformatic activities within the Bioeconomy Science Center will be the investigation and the development of algorithmic approaches for the solution of sophisticated queries from the above mentioned scopes.

Structural biology

This interdisciplinary topic delivers the information about the structure and dynamics of biologically and medically relevant molecules that is essential for understanding the mechanisms underlying life at all scales. The ability to obtain structural and dynamic information about proteins with atomic resolution allows, for example, optimization of biomolecules in industrially and socially relevant areas as the basis for a sustainable bioeconomy.
