BioSC EVENT

20th BioSC Lecture

Biotechnological processes enabling fixation, valorisation and terminal removal of atmospheric/ industrial CO2 can contribute to mitigate global climate change. Synthetic biotechnology combining technological aspects of chemical biology, systems- and synthetic biology with targeted bioprocess engineering offers a consolidated approach to design new, mass- and energy efficient routes for the generation of sustainable chemical entities.
The first part of the talk will convey advances in the development of oleogenious photoautotrophic and heterotrophic microbial platforms for conversion of CO2 in biofuels, high value lubricants, polymers and sustainable carbon fibers.
The subsequent section will discuss conversion of waste biomass streams to amorphous, non-natural polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB’s) thermoplasts combining genetically engineered E. coli production systems with targeted enzymatic reaction steps. A particular focus will be the simultaneous utilization of biomass derived pentose and hexose sugars by implementation of designed biosynthetic pathways in E. coli, thereby improving carbon flux towards target metabolic products.
In the final section of this talk the implementation of a plant based diterpene centred biosynthesis pathway in E. coli is presented, which enables sustainable production of a non-toxic insect deterrent with application in the agrochemical industry. The implications of the presented technologies with regard to curbing climate change and preserving biodiversity will be discussed in the context of developing a cyclic bioeconomy.
