BioSC Termine

Workshop "Waschen bei Raumtemperatur"

10. Juli 2014,  9 - 14 Uhr, RWTH Aachen

Seminarraum 1B/1.72, 1. Etage, Eingang: „Besucher“, Forckenbeckstraße 50, D-52056 Aachen

Abstract
The White paper “Washing at room temperature” in the frame of the NRW-Strategieprojekt BioSC has been initiated to evaluate research topics in respect of innovation, interdisciplinary research and its socio-economic relevance for the development and implementation of a sustainable and integrated bioeconomy.
Almost 80 % of the used energy in the laundry process is consumed during water heating in the washing cycle. The average washing temperature in European households is 41°C, since traditionally detergent formulations are more efficient at higher temperatures. At first sight, lowering washing temperature would significantly reduce energy consumption whereas sustainability in washing processes can significantly improve the CO2 balance. A number of challenges arise with washing at room temperature and usage of sustainable detergents.
Sustainable washing requires expertise in the field of chemical engineering in order to identify more sustainable sources of renewable raw materials combined with new synthesis routes and sustainable processing of renewable resources (sustainable plant production and resource stewardship), expertise in the field of microbial and molecular transformation for identification of biodegradable surfactants and builders, new surface active compounds, novel enzymes/compounds from new sources of raw materials, antimicrobial or growth inhibitors, biological bleaching systems/activators/ inhibitors, improving of already proven enzymes classes or isolating novel enzymes exhibiting new activities. In addition, the sustainable detergent production and its implementation in the global market would require life cycle assessments, consumer acceptance studies and process economics studies to evaluate its socio-economic importance.
The BioSC White paper “Washing at room temperature” aims to promote collaborations within BioSC by bridging disciplinary borders and to identify topics which could be efficiently addressed in future BioSC calls. Hence, we kindly invite you to participate at this workshop in order to help us identifying and proposing BioSC relevant topics.

BioSC Lecture "Low-cost shale gas - Burying a young bioeconomy?"

Prof. Kurt Wagemann, Executive Director, DECHEMA e.V.

11. Juli 2014, 11:00 -12:30 Uhr, FZ Jülich

Seminarraum 406, IBG-2: Pflanzenwissenschaften

BioSC-interne Veranstaltung, um verbindliche Anmeldung bis 10. Juli 2014 wird gebeten.

Abstract
Bioeconomy is a must - definitely in the long term!
But what about the short and medium term production of chemicals and polymers? Is there a more or less continuous shift away from coal to petroleum (up to now), to renewable, plant-based raw materials? Which role will natural gas and coal play in the nearer future?
The lecture will address several effects of cheap shale gas exploited via fracking: Decreasing prices for methane and ethylene and expectations on increasing prices for C3-, C4-, C5-base chemicals and aromatics.
In the end there is not just one answer; answers will have to be differentiated depending on the desired functionality of the molecule as well as the behaviour of end producers, retailers and consumers
