Mission of the institute: teaching and research for a responsible treatment of environment and technology.

Contributions to BioSC

In the context of bioeconomy, the energetic use of plant biomass over the entire life cycle from production and application up to the disposal with regard to environmental consequences must be evaluated. This concerns the following aspects:

  • Plant treatment with pesticides for food and energy production and impact of the pesticides on soil and water ecosystem functions (subject area: improving the quality and quantity of biomass)
  • Ecochemical and ecotoxicological evaluation of bioenergetic products from biomass (subject area: optimization of the usability of plant biomass)
  • Impact of energetic biomass use and land-use change on biodiversity at different scale levels up to the landscape scale (subject area: vulnerability approaches and ecosystem services)
  • Sustainable water management (subject area: water and ground water)
  • Efficiency assessment of remediation approaches (subject area: ecosystem functioning)
  • Restoration of damaged ecosystems and sediments (subject area: damage analysis, concepts for restoration measures and monitoring of restoration success)
  • Analysis, modeling and estimation of the adaptability of cultivation systems to environmental changes (subject area: vulnerability approaches and ecosystem services)
