November 2019 4th International BioSC Symposium and 6th BioSC Forum, Cologne, Germany, 18.-19.11.2019

Nina Ihling and Anita Loeschcke gave a combined talk: “Pseudomonas biotechnology: From bulk to high-value products” at the BioSC Symposium.

Nina Ihling presented recent results and progresses of the Bio²-project at the BioSC Forum.

The Bio² team presented five posters at the BioSC Symposium and Forum. The first poster “Integration of next generation biosurfactant production into biorefinery processes” gave an overview of the whole project, and three posters were dedicated to the work packages. The second poster highlighted the results from CG2 and CG 3 entitled “Construction of recombinant bacterial cell factories for biosurfactant production” and was dedicated to strain development. The third poster “Production of pure MEL-D-type biosurfactants using renewable resources in U. maydis” addressed results from CG1 and CG4. The fourth poster “Technical development, downstream processing and live cycle assessment of a novel Rhamnolipid production approach” focused on the results of CG5, CG6 and CG7 and addressed on process development and life cycle analysis. The fifth poster “Assessment of environmental and economic aspects of biosurfactants´ production” focused on the economic and social implications of the Bio² Project.

November 2019 Pseudomonas grassroots meeting, Leiden, Netherlands, 07-08.11.2019

At the Pseudomonas grassroots meeting, experts and PhDs working with Pseudomonas species had the opportunity to exchange experiences, new approaches and techniques regarding the work with these bacteria. In that frame Sonja Kubicki presented a poster about the “Construction of recombinant Pseudomonas putida cell factories for rhamnolipid production”.

Before the project enters the final project phase next year, we had a successful last annual meeting. All core groups presented and discussed their results and set the goals that will be focused on within the remaining project time. Afterwards the group leaders discussed strategic elements of the project.

Nina Ihling received the “Young Researcher Award 2019” for the establishment of her own research group. The prize is awarded by the Profilearea MSE of RWTH Aachen University.

October 2018 – January 2019 Workshop Verfahrenstechnik im Team”, Aachen, Germany

As in the last year, Bio² is represented in a special AVT workshop “Verfahrenstechnik im Team” where small groups of master students worked interdisciplinary in the different AVT chairs. Their projects were focused on the topic of biosurfactant production. Here the students were given the chance to work autonomously for four month on a manifold project. In this unique way, the students extended their knowledge of interdisciplinary communication and forward-looking project planning. They realized the importance of the bioeconomic change, along with improving their own professional skills and a lot of fun.

February 2018 Student talk on changes to bioeconomy, Aachen 20.02.2018

To reach a young audience, the change towards a sustainable bioeconomy was discussed with a group of pupils in the framework of the “Schüleruni” program at RWHT Aachen University. A class of 28 Dutch pupils was introduced to the topic of bioeconomy by an introductory talk by Julia Fritsch and a subsequent lively discussion. A final visit to the AVT labs and the biorefinery visualized our practical work towards bioeconomy.

A great opportunity: At the BioSC-Forum all BioSC-projects and partners met for an internal retreat. It was a great time to establish crosslinking relationships and to learn more about all the BioSC projects.

The BioSC-Symposium offered the chance to widen the focus on bioeconomy through national and international speakers presenting their overreaching objectives. The Bio² project had the chance to connect with leading international experts and to establish a valuable cooperation thereafter.

A first assessment: The annual meeting of the whole Bio² team and partners reviewed the starting period of the project. Every core group presented their first results. Interdisciplinary work units between different partners where specified. The official procedure was supplemented by lively discussions in a pleasant atmosphere to reflect the current state of the project and to deepen interpersonal relations.

April 2017 Bio² Kick-off Meeting, Aachen, Germany 12.04.2017

A successful start: Before the official launch of the Bio²-Focus Lab in Mai 2017, the kick-off meeting was the first coordinative get together of all seven Bio² core groups from Aachen, Düsseldorf and Jülich and the BioSC office. In addition to the general project presentation, all work packages where introduced in detail initiating scientific cooperation between the core groups.
