Ladies and Gentlemen,

in this issue of the BioSC Newsletter we report on the 6th BioSC Spotlight, which was dedicated to the perspectives for agriculture in the bioeconomy. We also present the competence platform Transform2Bio, another multidisciplinary BioSC project alongside the FocusLabs, which will run for three years from 1 September, and its leader, Dr Sandra Venghaus. A highlight of the last few months was finally the Open Day at Forschungszentrum Jülich, during which the topic of bioeconomy was communicated to a broad public.

6th BioSC Spotlight: “Bioeconomy perspectives for a sustainable agriculture”

On 9 July 2019, the 6th BioSC Spotlight took place in Inden, on the edge of the Inden opencast lignite mine, which was dedicated to structural change in the Rhenish mining area and the opportunities for agriculture within the framework of a sustainable bioeconomy. The approximately 80 participants came from science, business, local politics, agricultural administration, civil society, environmental associations and agricultural practice. The event took place in cooperation with the project \'Modellregion BioökonomieREVIER Rheinland\'.

BioSC Competence Platform “Transform2Bio”:  Start 1st September 2019

The implementation of a sustainable bioeconomy requires fundamental transformations of existing resource systems, value networks, business models, infrastructures and governance systems. The forthcoming large-scale structural change in the Rhenish mining area offers a unique opportunity to explore and shape implementation options towards a regionally coherent sustainable bioeconomy. This is where the BioSC competence platform Transform2Bio comes in which is funded over a period of three years.

Junior Research Group Dr. Sandra Venghaus

Discourses and decision-making mechanisms in complex social processes and the modelling of socio-ecological systems - these are only two of the research topics of Dr. Sandra Venghaus. She is group leader at the Institute for Energy and Climate Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich and will lead the BioSC competence platform Transform2Bio.

The 21st BioSC Lecture: “Cradle to cradle: Upcycling bioresources for the new circular bioeconomy”

On 11 June 2019, the 21st BioSC Lecture took place at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Prof. Dr. Erik Meers from the University of Ghent presented three European clusters working at different levels to make the transition from linear to circular value creation possible. In particular, he addressed the nitrogen cycle and the use and recovery of nitrogen in agriculture.

Open Day at Forschungszentrum Jülich: High interest in the bioeconomy

On 7 July 2019, the Open Day took place at Forschungszentrum Jülich with around 23,000 visitors.
