Symposium - Ausbildung - Retreat

Auf dem 1. BioSC Forum am 3./4. November 2014 in Wuppertal werden im Rahmen eines Symposiums die White Paper sowie die SEED FUND und BOOST FUND Projekte der ersten und zweiten Ausschreibung vorgestellt und Ergebnisse intern diskutiert. Am zweiten Tag haben die DoktorandInnen der BioSC Core Groups die Möglichkeit, einen ersten Einblick in die Konzepte und Arbeitsweisen der nachhaltigen Bioökonomie zu erhalten. Gleichzeitig werden in einem Retreat Ideen für gemeinsame Initiativen entwickelt.

Algae - an alternative biological resourse for the sustainable bioeconomy

Algae assimilate carbon dioxide from the Earth atmosphere into energy-rich organic compounds that significantly contribute to sustaining food chains throughout the biosphere. As an essential part of photosynthetic phytoplankton, algae also represent a unique driver of global geochemical and energetic cycles that annually captures approx. 2000 million tons of carbon. Unlike higher plants, the immense potential of algae for modern bioeconomy has not been yet adequately exploited.

The promising benefits of algal biotechnology can be achieved by combining expertise in biology, engineering, mathematical modeling, and other areas - all oriented towards new technologies that will be economically feasible and accepted by society. The interdisciplinary structure and expertise of the BioSC provide an excellent framework for such a synergistic innovative algal research.
Participants in the BioSC workshop “Perspective of Algal Technologies” will have a unique opportunity to identify goals that can be targeted as well as tools and strategies to reach them.
