Therefore, the BioSC aims for a transdisciplinary education of graduates at a top international level. The transfer of basic knowledge and the holistic understanding of bioeconomy challenges are therefore the main focus of the BioSC graduate education approach.

Nachwachsende Rohstoffe – Das grüne Herz der Bioökonomie

Nachwachsende Rohstoffe sind ein Schlüsselthema des 21. Jahrhunderts. Die Nutzung von Biomasse soll die Energieversorgung sicherstellen, den Klimawandel aufhalten und unsere Luxusartikel ökologisch vertretbar machen. Die gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen sind groß.

Was aber sind nachwachsende Rohstoffe? Mit welchen Pflanzen und Anbausystemen werden sie in der Land- und Forstwirtschaft Mitteleuropas erzeugt? Wie wandelt sich Biomasse in Festbrennstoffe, Biotreibstoffe, Biogas oder industrielle Grundstoffe? Was sagen uns Öko- und Energiebilanzen? Dürfen wir nachwachsende Rohstoffe erzeugen, wenn Menschen hungern?

Next generation biomass plants – prospects and challenges for future bioeconomy

A successful bioeconomy will rely on biomass plants which meet the requirements of the industry and can be produced in a sustainable manner. This graduate course will cover the wide and interdisciplinary research on biomass plants within BioSC on sustainable and resource effient production, phenotyping of relevant traits, selecting best varieties, microbiological and biochemical approaches, process technology, biorefinery concepts and economic considerations on the way from the field to the product. The goal is to understand the different supply chains in plant based bioeconomy and how new utilization concepts could support new developments.

Course "Introduction to the sustainable bioeconomy"

The training unit provides an initial insight into the concepts and approaches for implementing a sustainable bioeconomy. The different specialist perspectives on a relevant topic area are initially presented separately as a case study. Subsequently, the interdisciplinary and integrated processing is practiced and the added value of such an approach is worked out. More information will be available here soon.

Winners of the BioSC Prizes 2014 are chosen

For the first time, outstanding dissertations and excellence in supervision of graduate students were awarded in a competition procedure within the NRW strategic project. Interdisciplinary doctoral theses with high relevance for an integrated bioeconomy and supervising concepts for an integrated bioeconomy were sought. A detailed report contains the names of the prize winners.
