In the second funding phase of the NRW strategy project BioSC, six large multidisciplinary collaborative projects, the FocusLabs, were set up with a regular duration of three years and a total budget of around €2.4 million each. The aim was to work on complex multidisciplinary topics in the focus topic areas and not only to bring together the necessary expertise, but also to establish joint governance. The coordination of the FocusLabs was placed in the hands of young scientists.
