Nature is our source of inspiration for the institute: Structures of the target molecules originate from natural sources or rare actually derived from them. Furthermore, the catalysts utilised are obviously also of biological origin. Central themes are natural product syntheses and the development of (selectivity) assays to find new biocatalysts. For a modular approach an enzyme tool-box is continuously extended.
The institute has in-depth expertise in organic synthesis. Within the BioSC this will be utilised in bio- and chemocatalytic conversions to form key-intermediates for the synthesis of basic and fine chemicals, but also for more complex target compounds. Especially for the further development of the chemoenzymatic approaches one focus is the rational design of catalysts.
