Research topics and profile (related to bioeconomy)

Our research primarily addresses the socio‐economic assessment of innovation towards a sustainable bioeconomy. We specialize in comprehensive sustainability evaluations of bio‐ based innovations and the transformation to a circular bioeconomy, with a central focus also on behavioral impacts on these processes.

In our approach, we draw from established principles like institutional and resource economics as well as innovation systems and diffusion theory to understand the dynamics of technology adoption and scale up. We also consider policy, regulatory and organizational structures that shape the sustainability transformation.

Given the limited availability of biomass resources for a broad and growing portfolio of potential applications, their efficient use is of central interest to us. Both empirical as well as computational approaches are used in our research group to analyze the economic, ecological, and social sustainability impacts.

Contributions to BioSC

The transformation to a sustainable bioeconomy requires joint efforts between a variety of stakeholders. It involves profound changes in resource systems, business models, and governance structures. Research and innovation play a vital role in decoupling growth from emissions through bio‐based products and processes.

However, scale up and market diffusion of promising technologies bring along a number of challenges. To ensure sustainability, the economic dynamics governing successful market expansion and potential trade‐offs must be carefully understood.
