Bio2oundry - Accelerating technology transfer in the BioSC region by design of a biofoundry concept

Abstract

As a central component of bioeconomy concepts, biorefineries are discussed to ensure the provision of bio-based resources and energy with the best possible added value and use of resources (keyword: circular economy). However, many processes are still in development and require tests on a certain scale. The concept of biofoundries is intended to offer a shared platform to integrate and optimize new technologies for bio-based processes. In this WHITE PAPER project, a concept and for such a pilot and test facility should be developed as a biofoundry for the Rheinische Revier that should complement the growing bioeconomy (innovation) ecosystem in the context of regional structural change. The central research questions to be answered by the means of an exploratory design with the help of expert interviews and workshops are: 1) the role of biofoundries for the transfer process from science to business and from lab to factory scale and 2) the integration of biofoundries into the larger innovation ecosystem of the Rheinische Revier with all available transfer infrastructures such as incubators or test labs . Based on this, a concept for a regional biofoundry with a circular Proposal for the WHITE PAPER -Project - Bio2oundry business model is to be developed that can become an important strategic element for the implementation of bio-based business models and value generation in the Rheinische Revier.
