Biotechnology as one of the central technologies of the bioeconomy was the focus of the third talk in the "Karliczek.Impulse." series on June 16. Prof. Dr. Karl-Erich Jaeger, Director of the Institute for Molecular Enzyme Technology at HHU Düsseldorf and member of the BioSC, gave the keynote speech. The subsequent discussion focused on how biotechnology and, in particular, enzyme technology can contribute to a sustainable bioeconomy today and in the future.

Five years ago, Georg Schaumann’s research team at Jülich combined its biosensor technology with expertise in microbial strain development to set up the biotechnology spin-off SenseUP GmbH. Now, over the next three years, the spin-off from the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich aims to develop cost-effective and scalable methods for producing RNA-based substances. Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research Thomas Rachel (member of the German Bundestag) officially announced that this project will receive funding worth € 800,000.
On June 5, the exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft set off on its second tour as part of the Science Year Bioeconomy 2020/21. Again on the 2021 tour, the exhibit „Algae Flipper“ with the BioSCs`s participation is on board.
Under the motto " This is how the future works!", Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (German Federal Foundation for the Environment) are inviting visitors to the Week of the Environment on June 10 and 11. The BioSC is among the 150 WdU-certified exhibitors as a partner of IBG-2 Plant Sciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich and the initiative BioökonomieREVIER, presenting a contribution on the sustainable management of lignite phase-out.

The spin-off BioThrust has been awarded the Innovation Award 2020 of RWTH Aachen University for the development of a technology for bubble-free gassing of biotechnological processes. The technology was partly validated in the BioSc FocusLab Bio2.
