Prof. Dörte Rother was awarded for her work on biocatalysis with the "Biotrans Junior Award 2019" in Groningen. The award is during the BIOTRANS conference, on of the important conferences for the research field biocatalysis.

Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz informs himself about bioeconomy

On 8 August, Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the Forschungszentrum Jülich. He was accompanied by Dietmar Nietan, Member of the Bundestag. Both werde informed e.g. about the structural change in the Rhenish mining area and the bioeconomy. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr led the two politicians through the new IBG-2 greenhouse, where the BioSC product exhibition on "Bioeconomy in Everyday Life" could be seen.

6th BioSC Spotlight: “Bioeconomy perspectives for a sustainable agriculture”

On 9 July 2019, the 6th BioSC Spotlight took place on the edge of the Inden opencast lignite mine, which was dedicated to structural change in the Rhenish mining area and the opportunities for agriculture within the framework of a sustainable bioeconomy. The approximately 80 participants came from science, business, local politics, agricultural administration, civil society, environmental associations and agricultural practice. The event took place in cooperation with the project 'Modellregion BioökonomieREVIER Rheinland'.

Open Day at Forschungszentrum Jülich: High interest in the bioeconomy

On 7 July, the Open Day took place at Forschungszentrum Jülich with around 23,000 visitors. The bioeconomy trail designed by the Jülich BioSC Core Groups met with great interest. It illustrated the concept of a circular economy from the sustainable use of soil and water to plant production, the biotechnological production of materials and chemicals from biomass and the recovery of nutrients. The exhibition "Products of bioeconomy" also had numerous visitors.

The BioSC was well represented at the “2nd Synthetic Biology for Natural Products Conference”

The second conference on “Synthetic Biology for Natural Products” took place from 02.-05.06.2019 in Puerto Vallarta (Mexico). This year, the focus was laid on „The Interface of (Meta)Genomics, Synthetic Biology and Natural Product Discovery“. The BioSC was represented by contributions of co-workers from the IMET (HHU Düsseldorf), who presented their research within the BioSC FocusLabs „CombiCom“ and „Bio2“ in talks and poster sessions.

21st BioSC Lecture: "Cradle to cradle: upcycling bioresources for the new circular economy"

On 11 June 2019, the 21st BioSC Lecture took place at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Prof. Dr. Erik Meers from the University of Ghent presented the Biorefine Cluster Europe. The Cluster networks research projects for the valorisation of residual flows from agriculture, agro- and food industry as well as biological waste and wastewater flows and supports the implementation of the results in practice.
