On October 10, 2024, around 60 doctoral students of various disciplines from all over NRW met in Neuss for the 9th NRW Doctoral Students' Day “Future Bioeconomy”. This year, the focus was on the role of new technologies that are driving the transformation to a bioeconomy. Automation processes, robotics, AI-supported developments, modelling, digital twins, miniaturization and upscaling of analysis methods can have a major impact on efficiency. But how are such possibilities integrated and used for optimization? What new opportunities arise? And what are the advantages and challenges of automation and digitalization in agriculture and the bio-based industry? These questions were discussed using fascinating and diverse practical examples. The speakers came from a wide range of backgrounds, from young start-ups to international companies and, as always, there was ample opportunity for exchange and networking. A successful day ended with a panel discussion with all the speakers.
