Open Day at Forschungszentrum Jülich: Large crowds at the BioSC booth

Around 22,000 visitors came to Forschungszentrum Jülich on 7 September to take a look inside the campus. BioSC was there with a large bioeconomy product exhibition and many current research results from ongoing projects.

Among other things, the bioeconomy exhibition featured a microbial palm oil substitute from the BioSC project NextVegOil, which can be produced from agricultural residual electricity/residual corn straw. The Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University presented products (a spool of yarn, a car door and a piece of artificial turf) made from both hemp (BioSC project OptiCellu) and sustainable plant-based polylactic acid. The BioSC stand was brought to life by the various lupine plants, which can be used as a source of protein for coffee and flour. As on the last Open Day, the algae flipper was also available for children to play with. It demonstrates in a playful way how algae can be used to filter remaining nutrients from wastewater.
