Die Produktion von Chemikalien und Materialien in einer nachhaltigen Bioökonomie ist durch neue Prozessketten gekennzeichnet, in denen die Biokatalyse mit Mikroorganismen und Enzymen eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Biogene Rohstoffe umfassen ein weites Spektrum von mehrjährigen Biomassepflanzen bis hin zu landwirtschaftlichen Abfallströmen. Dazu kommen vermehrt nichtbiogene Kohlenstoffquellen wie CO2 oder kommunale Abfallströme, wie beispielsweise Kunststoffabfälle. Um diesem breiten Spektrum an Ausgangsstoffen gerecht zu werden, muss das konventionelle „Ein Rohstoff – ein Produkt“-Konzept zu flexiblen und modularen „Multi-Rohstoff – Multi-Produkt“- Prozessketten weiterentwickelt werden, in denen Chemokatalyse und Biokatalyse kombiniert werden.
Die synthetische Biologie als Impulsgeber für die molekulare Biotechnologie liefert vielfältige neue Konzepte, um diesen veränderten Anforderungen zu begegnen. Eine der größten Herausforderungen besteht darin, die daraus resultierenden Produktionsprozesse und Produkte für die Praxis nutzbar und konkurrenzfähig gegenüber vorhandenen erdölbasierten Verfahren zu machen. Dabei bestehen die größten Erfolgsaussichten im Bereich höherwertiger Stoffe mit zum Teil neuen Funktionalitäten, das heißt Feinchemikalien, Naturstoffe oder Proteine. Da diese Stoffklassen komplexe Synthesewege aufweisen, sind modulare mehrschrittige Verfahren am erfolgversprechendsten. Auch bei der Nutzung von Nebenströmen bioökonomischer Prozessketten können erhebliche zusätzliche Wertschöpfungen erreicht werden, wenn neben den Hauptprodukten weitere wertvolle Feinchemikalien oder pharmazeutisch nutzbare Stoffe gewonnen werden können.
